This is achieved by having the teeth cleaned by a dental professional (commonly termed &#8220;<a title=\"Debridement (dental)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Debridement_(dental)\">scaling<\/a> and polishing&#8221;), or at home by various oral hygiene methods. Calculus is difficult to remove without a professional clean.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Common causes of tooth discloration:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #999999; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Age<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #999999; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Eating Habits: daily consumption of coffee,tea,red wine,berries can cause extrinsic tooth stains<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #999999; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Smoking or chewing tobacco<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #999999; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Poor dental hygiene<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #999999; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Medications (antidepressants,tetracycline antibiotics,chemotherapy and others)<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #999999; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Trauma-pulp necrosis<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #999999; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Oral rinses with chlorexidine<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #999999; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">To whiten the natural tooth shade, bleaching is suggested. It is a common \u00a0procedure in <a title=\"Cosmetic dentistry\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cosmetic_dentistry\">cosmetic dentistry\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0and a number of different techniques are used by dental professionals.\u00a0In our practice we prefer the method which combines the application in office and the use of bleaching trays with whitening gel for a 7-day period at home.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #999999; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">The process of bleaching is a simple and fast procedure which is fairly harmless on tooth structure.The bleaching gel is applied on teeth releasing oxygen.The final result is teeth with a brighter color.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #999999; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">It is a safe procedure when taken place under the supervision of the dentist.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #999999; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Since the bleaching gel is made mostly from peroxide, there are no remarkable side effects. Some people may experience tooth sensitivity and irritation of the gums\u00a0for a few days.In rare cases a disensitizing agent may be applied in order to eliminate tooth sensitivity.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Dental bleaching should not be applied to:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #999999; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Children and teenagers below the age of 18<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #999999; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Pregnant \u00a0and lactating women<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #999999; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">People with sensitive teeth<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #999999; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Individuals with extensive fillings of amalgam or resins and crowns because dental bleaching has no effect on porcelain and fillings<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #999999; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">People who are allergic to teeth whitening agents like peroxide<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #999999; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">People with chipped teeth or with small dental cracks<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #3366ff;\"><strong><span id=\"Maintenance\" style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Maintenance<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; color: #999999;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Although treatment results can be rapid, stains can reappear within the first few months and years of treatment.
