This is achieved by having the teeth cleaned by a dental professional (commonly termed \u201c<a title=\"Debridement (dental)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Debridement_(dental)\">scaling<\/a> and <a title=\"Tooth polishing\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tooth_polishing\">polishing<\/a>\u201c), or at home by various <a title=\"Oral hygiene\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oral_hygiene\">oral hygiene<\/a> methods. Calculus is difficult to remove without a professional clean.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Common causes of tooth discloration:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Age<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Eating Habits: daily consumption of coffee,tea,red wine,berries can cause extrinsic tooth stains<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Smoking or chewing tobacco<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Poor dental hygiene<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Medications (antidepressants,tetracycline antibiotics,chemotherapy and others)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Trauma-pulp necrosis<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Oral rinses with chlorexidine<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>To whiten the natural tooth shade, bleaching is suggested. It is a common \u00a0procedure in <a title=\"Cosmetic dentistry\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cosmetic_dentistry\">cosmetic dentistry\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0and a number of different techniques are used by dental professionals.\u00a0In our practice we prefer the method which combines the application in office and the use of bleaching trays with whitening gel for a 7-day period at home.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The process of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.athens-dental.com\/en\/project\/aesthetic-dentistry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bleaching <\/a>is a simple and fast procedure which is fairly harmless on tooth structure.<\/strong><strong>The bleaching gel is applied on teeth releasing oxygen.<\/strong><strong>The final result is teeth with a brighter color.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>It is a<\/strong> <strong>safe procedure <\/strong><strong>when taken place under the supervision of the dentist.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Since the bleaching gel is made mostly from<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peroxide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>peroxide<\/strong><\/a>,<strong> there are no remarkable side effects. Some people may experience tooth sensitivity and irritation of the gums\u00a0for a few days.<\/strong><strong>In rare cases adisensitizing agent may be applied in order to eliminate tooth sensitivity.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dental bleaching should not be applied to:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Children and teenagers below the age of 18<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Pregnant \u00a0and lactating women<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>People with sensitive teeth<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Individuals with extensive fillings of amalgam or resins and crowns because dental bleaching has no effect on porcelain and fillings<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>People who are allergic to teeth whitening agents like peroxide<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>People with chipped teeth or with small dental cracks<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span id=\"Maintenance\" class=\"mw-headline\">Maintenance<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Although treatment results can be rapid, stains can reappear within the first few months and years of treatment.
